Sweet Peeps

While at work a little over a week ago I found a newly hatched baby bird that had fallen out of his nest. He was completely bald of feathers, skin translucent, and eyes still closed. He had fallen about 8 feet to the ground from his nest. He was lying flat on his back and I thought he was dead, but then I saw he was breathing. I did the only thing I thought was right and rescued him. I still had 10 hours of my shift left and honestly didn’t think he would make it through the night. But now we are going on two weeks and he has grown so much already. I wish I would have been taking pictures all along, but I didn’t think he would make it this far. I have not done this alone. A good friend of mine has joint custody. She watches him when I am at work and vice versa. She took him the first day after I found him…and she is an even bigger animal lover than me…and so I was worried about what would happen that first day and how Mary would handle it if the worst came. But thanks to Mary…he made it his first day in the world and she has been helping me mother him since. Our ultimate goal is to release him back into the outdoors, but we are taking it one day at a time. And from what I have read sometimes the little guys like to stay where life is good and easy…other times they take their first flight and never look back. Or they fly away to return every spring…So we shall see…I would be happy either way. If he stayed with us or left for the big world, I am just amazed and happy he is alive and doing so well!
